Bryan Smith Eyeing Springfield Mile Victory

Written by Andrew Swain:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 1, 2014) – Perhaps no rider on the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National circuit has taken a liking to mile-long tracks more than Flint, Michigan’s Bryan Smith over the years. The Crosley Radio/Villa-Esparza rider will be eager to roll his Kawasaki off the truck later this month when the series heads to Springfield, Ill. for this season’s first go-around of the Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on May 25, 2014. Smith will be looking to rebound after a rough start at Daytona’s opening doubleheader weekend to begin the 2014 season in March.

“It’s definitely going to feel great to get back on the Kawasaki and compete at Springfield,” said Smith. “I feel more at home on the bigger tracks and I’m extremely excited to get out there and compete against those guys again.”

It’s no secret to anyone familiar with the sport that Smith has seen most of his success come on mile-long tracks over the course of his career. To put it into perspective, out of Smith’s 11 career victories, nine of them have come on mile-long tracks.

“I think a lot of things have factored into my success on the mile tracks throughout my career,” said Smith. “Experience is probably the main thing. For whatever reason, I just feel extremely comfortable on the long course; kind of like (Henry) Wiles at Peoria. It just clicks for him there like the miles click for me.”

Smith makes his money on the long course and luckily for him, there are five mile-long races scheduled for 2014 including both Springfield Miles, the Indy Mile, Virginia Mega Mile, and the Santa Rosa Mile.
