Shelton: Hagerstown Report

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (July 29, 2009) - The much dreaded Hagerstown sky let loose at the 1/2 mile on Saturday just after the completion of tech inspection. With the amount of rain that fell it made the track unrideable. Track crews began to wheel pack the surface and continued for hours.

AMA Pro officials sent out the #21 of Jared Mees, #33 JR Schnable and #42 Brian Smith to test the track. After a few laps were popped off the three riders declared that the track was a go and the Pro-Sport riders headed to staging. While in staging the sky's opened up again putting practice on hold for a bit longer. Track crews headed back out and this time scraping the top layer off the race track made preparing the surface a better success.

All the rain and track prep, and still the fear of more rain on the way caused a second riders meeting, in the end, the AMA crew went to an abbreviated program. The riders completed 2 timed qualifying sessions with Brad Baker fast qualifier in the Pro-Sports and the series newest sensation #43 Sammy Halbert fast qualifier in the Expert Twins. Following right along with the program we went directly into the heats. Pro- Sport heat winners were James "The Rocket" Rispoli and Mike LaBelle who was second fastest Pro qualifier for the night. In the Expert heats your winners were Sammy Halbert, Kenny Coolbeth, and "Jersey" Jake Johnson. With the abbreviated program in play the riders did get to run any LCQ'S or Semi's.

A very Special guest was on had this weekend, Mr. Al Wilcox who has been involved in this sport for many many years. He was a guest flagger for the Dash for Cash. He did a very nice job of flagging and when he threw the checkered flag on the last lap it was "Jersey" Jake and the line to take the win.

Heading into the Main events, sprinkles of rain would come and go but keeping our fingers crossed really paid off. In the Pro-Sports your podium finishers were 3rd place Mike LaBelle, 2nd place James Rispoli, and 1st place Brad Baker all three rode a very solid race. Brad still holds the points lead heading into Sturgis. Your expert podium finishers were 3rd place Sammy Halbert, 2nd place Kenny Coolbeth and 1st place "Jersey" Jake Johnson. This was Jake's first win sense leaving factory Suzuki. He was aboard the Mike Hacker owned Supertrapp, Johnny Goad XR 750 Harley Davidson. His family and crew were overcome with emotion as Jake took to the podium.

#1 Kenny Coolbeth got a well deserved second place finish. His luck turned around here at Hagerstown! Heading into Sturgis on August 4th your expert points leader is still "Jammin" Jared Mees #21 who finished his night out with a solid 4th place finish. Hope to see all you race fans at Sturgis! From the Podium this is Miss AMA Pro Flat Track!!!!
