Baker returns to Superprestigio in hopes of defending his title

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 11, 2014) – Brad Baker went to Spain for the Superprestigio in January as a newcomer to the international scene.

Having just wrapped up his first AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship, the Washington native was invited to compete against the likes of MotoGP superstar Marc Marquez in the prestigious short track exhibition. He had never even been to Europe before.

This time around, Baker is the veteran. He won the event and was invited back alongside current champion Jared Mees and fellow AMA Pro Flat Track rider Shayna Texter. Baker even arrived a week before his fellow competitors to train.

“You think about it, it’s really cool,” Baker said. “You almost don’t believe it until the day you’re hopping on the plane. It’s definitely a cool deal. It’s an honor to be one of the Americans to get to do this.”

Last year, Baker and Marquez jumped out to a big gap on the field and battled for a few laps until contact between the two put the MotoGP champion on the ground. Baker cruised from there, looking over his shoulder to check on Marquez.

This time around, with other members of the AMA Pro Flat Track paddock also in the field, the race is expected to be even tighter. But that doesn’t mean they won’t have fun.

“It’s mainly to put on a good show, but you get us out on the racetrack together, we racers, we’re going to race each other hard,” Baker said. “It’s a little bit of pressure. If anyone should be a favorite to win, it should be (one of the AMA Pro Flat Track riders) because that’s what we do.”

Baker is back in the form that won him the not only the first Superprestigio, but also the 2013 Grand National Championship. A broken arm suffered in the offseason set Baker back in his hopes to retain the No. 1 plate in 2014, but he was one of the most consistent riders in the later part of the season and won at Calistoga.

So if experience is a factor, there’s no reason Baker won’t be the man to beat Saturday.

The Superprestigio is set to begin at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) on Saturday, Dec. 13 and all of the action will be broadcast live on www.FansChoice.tv, the official home for live streaming of all AMA Pro Flat Track events. In addition to FansChoice.tv, the Superprestigio will be available for live viewing at www.cycleworld.com, www.motorcyclistonline.com, www.sportrider.com.
