Mikey Martin Race Report: Brainerd & Calistoga

(October 8 ,2011) - For the Brainerd Half-Mile, it was the first time I've raced at North Central Speedway. The track was a slippery third-mile, and I was fast, but kept making small mistakes. Subsequently, I qualified eighth overall.

In my heat race, I finished second and was able to try a few different lines. We also made a radical gearing change; we very rarely ever change more than two teeth between the heat and the main event, but felt that it was necessary.

I was on the front row for the main event and knew if the gearing change was correct that I could put it on the box. The light went green, and I put my head down. With everyone rushing off the line, I was the third one into turn one. I was able to make a pass, and was in second for most of the main event, but kept making the same mistake coming out of turn two. The track was slick and I needed to be a little less aggressive on my exit, which ended up costing me. I lost a position and was able to get it back, but made the same mistake again. After running a majority of the race in third, I lost another position on the last lap. I had to settle for a fourth place finish.

Calistoga Half Mile:
The day started off well.... I set the second fastest overall qualifying time, which put me on the poll in the second heat race. I also set Fast Qualifier by winning the fastest heat race.

I have been riding a little on the conservative side lately, just trying to stay out of trouble, but missing the podium is getting old. With that said, I set out to win the main event in front of my hometown crowd.

We decided to run one gear instead of shifting; I felt very fast on my sight in lap, I was confident I was going to be on top of the box.

We were all ready, and the light went green. I dropped the clutch, and was the first one into turn one, but my bike was losing power and bikes started passing me on both sides. My motor blew, and was pumping oil out all over myself, and my rear tire. I ended up falling in my own oil. I was able to go to my back up bike, but the rule is if you go to the back up bike you start from the penalty line, which is the fourth row. I knew what I had to do and that was simply gain as many positions as I could and minimize the number of points I would loose to Callies and Avila. I was able to make ten passes in sixteen laps and was happy that I ended up with an eighth place finish after blowing a motor.

The final round will be October 15 at the LA County Fairplex in Pomona, CA. Going into the final round, I'm 14 points ahead of Michael Avila, and 15 ahead of Gerit Callies. My goal was to clinch the title at Calistoga, but it is going to come down to the final round.
Come by and grab a new autograph sheet and say hi.
